All praise is due to Allah SWT, Lord of the worlds, The Cherisher, The Sustainer.
May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his noble family, his companions and all those who follow their guidance till the Day of Reckoning.
My dear respected brothers & sisters;
Everyday, we are all exposed to the whispering of the Syaitan. We are also potentially vulnerable to Al-'ain (the evil eye), hasad (jealousy) and to magicians who contact the jinn or Syaitan through Sihir (black magic), and command them to attack and torment their chosen victims. Unfortunately, these evil practices are very common in our communities, Muslims included.
Therefore, it is vital we remind ourselves the daily azkar, taught to us by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for our protection.
Firstly, by saying the name of Allah, just by itself, has the power to banish the Syaitan. We should say Bismillah ( ) often.
Abu al-Malih RA reported, the Prophet ﷺ said:
Do not say, "May Syaitan perish". Verily, if you say that, he will swell up with pride until he is as big as a house and he says: By my might!
Rather, you should say: "In the name of Allah". Verily, if you say that he will shrink until he is as small as a fly.
Jabir bin Abdillah RA reported that he heard the Prophet ﷺsay: If a person mentions the name of Allah upon entering his house or eating, Syaitan says, addressing his followers, 'You will find no where to spend the night and no dinner.' But if he enters without mentioning the name of Allah, Syaitan says to his followers, 'You have found a place to spend the night in, and if he does not mention the name of Allah at the time of eating, Syaitan says: 'You have found a place to spend the night in as well as food.'
Anas ibn Malik RA reported, the Prophet ﷺ said: Whoever says when he leaves his house:
(In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah for there is no power or might but with Allah), then it will be said to him that you have been sufficed and protected, and the devils will be far from him.
My dear respected brothers and sisters;
We can see these are easy words to say but they have great benefit; the name of Allah SWT is mighty indeed.
Another act of protection is the Azan.
Jabir RA reported: The Prophet ﷺ said:
Verily, when Satan hears the call to prayer, he flees to a very distant place.
Therefore let us try to remember to make the Azan if we are praying at home, which can be done in a moderate voice. InshaAllah there would be some benefit.
The Quran, my dear brothers and sisters, is our most powerful defense against the Syaitan. Surat Al-Baqarah, Surat Al-Falaq, and Surat Al-Nas are especially potent in warding off the Syaitan.
Abu Huraira RA reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Verily, Syaitan flees from the house in which Surat Al-Baqarah is recited.
Hence, we should endeavour to read Surat Al-Baqarah regularly at home. It is a great surah with huge benefits in protecting our family and home from the Syaitan and black magic.
Ayat Al-Kursi and the last two verses of Surat Al-Baqarah are particularly emphasised.
In a shortened version of a great hadith regarding the Ayat Al-Kursi, Abu Huraira RA reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entrusted me to protect the charity of Ramadan. Someone came to me and began taking from the food. I took hold of him and I said, “I will certainly take you to the Messenger of Allah!” Abu Huraira RA told the story to the Prophet ﷺ and he RA said, “The man told me that when I go to bed, I should recite the verse of the throne (Quran 2:255). Allah would appoint a protector with me and no devil would come near to me until morning.” The Prophet ﷺ said: He told you the truth, although he is a liar. That was Syaitan.
Al-Nu’man ibn Bashir RA reported, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Syaitan does not come near a house in which the last two verses of Surat al-Baqarah have been recited for three nights.
In addition we should make a habit of reading the last 2 chapters of the Quran every morning and evening.
Abu Sa’id RA reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would seek refuge from jinn and the evil eye of man, until the two chapters of refuge were revealed, Surat Al-Falaq and Al-Nas. After they were revealed, he ﷺ took both of them and left everything else.
‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir RA reported, that the Prophet ﷺ said: Allah has revealed verses the likes of which you have never seen, ‘Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the people,’ (Quran 114:1) and, ‘Say; I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak.’ (Quran 113:1)
By seeking protection from Allah SWT;
Reading Surat Al-Baqarah, particularly
Ayat Al Kursi and its last two verses;
Reading Surat al-Falaq and Surat al-Nas
along with other verses of the Quran, and azkar taught to us by the Prophet ﷺ such as before going to sleep, before entering the toilet etc are important daily rituals we should do ourselves and teach our family, as protection against the Syaitan, evil eye and black magic.
These azkars are now easily available through the internet and smartphones, InshaAllah.
May Allah SWT protect us and our loved ones from the Syaitan and his followers. Ameen.
My dear respected brothers & sisters;
Just as following the correct teachings of Islam is important (according to the Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ), it is equally important to avoid certain practices that are very common in the Muslim community, practices that are sinful and may lead to shirk.
These include the use of amulets (or jimat, taweez and many other names) and seeking help from the wrong people who themselves use black magic and the jinn. Treating Sihir using Sihir is never acceptable in Islam.
‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir RA reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ received a group of men and he ﷺ accepted the pledge of nine of them, while he ﷺ refrained from one. They said, “O Messenger of Allah, you accepted the pledge of nine men and left this one out?” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Verily, there is an amulet upon him.” The man took it in his hand and cut it, then the Prophet ﷺ accepted his pledge and he ﷺ said, “Whoever hangs an amulet around his neck has committed an act of idolatry.”
We ask Allah SWT for tawfiq to benefit from what has been shared today. Ameen.
