A Robe from Jannah

Written on 11/16/2020

All praise is due to Allah SWT, Lord of the worlds, The Cherisher, The Sustainer.

May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his noble family, his companions and all those who follow their guidance till the Day of Reckoning.

My dear respected brothers & sisters;

Prophet Ibrahim AS (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُunderwent a severe trial when he tried to spread the message of Islam and the oneness of Allah SWT. He was shunned by his family and community, and ultimately tied to a catapault to be thrown into a great fire.

Some scholars say Ibrahim AS was stripped of his clothing. It was a humiliating experience in front of his people. But Allah SWT responded to his dua:

Allah (Alone) is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us)

Consequently, the great fire lost its heat and did not harm Ibrahim AS. As he left his people, travelling with his wife Sarah, Ibrahim AS made several dua to Allah SWT:

[And he said], "My Lord, grant me authority and join me with the righteous.

And grant me a reputation of honor among later generations.

And place me among the inheritors of the Garden of Pleasure.

And forgive my father. Indeed, he has been of those astray.

And do not disgrace me on the Day they are [all] resurrected -

The Day when there will not benefit [anyone] wealth or children

But only one who comes to Allah with a sound heart."

(Quran 26:83-89)

Allah SWT responded to this du'a; the name Ibrahim (or Abraham) AS is honoured by Jews, Christians as well as Muslims.

Furthermore, in Sahih Bukhari 3171; the Prophet  said, “The first to be clothed on the Day of Resurrection will be Abraham...”

On a day when everyone gathered will be unclothed, Ibrahim AS will be the first person to be clothed, with a robe from Jannah. We see how Allah SWT honoured Ibrahim AS, who suffered and lost much for the sake of Allah SWT in this world.

We also see that Ibrahim AS continued to make dua for his beloved father, even after he turned against him.

My dear respected brothers & sisters;

We ask Allah SWT for goodness in this world but our main focus should be the reward of the hereafter.

We recall in almost every Eid Ul-Adha of the great sacrifice of Ibrahim and Ismail AS involving the sacrificial ram. This earlier event of the trial by fire was another sacrifice by Ibrahim AS, who stood completely alone against his people, including his father and family, for the sake of Allah SWT.

Remember that we would never be tested as severely as Ibrahim AS was tested, or like Muhammadﷺ was tested. Make full use of our time; every hour that passes by we will never get back. Sometimes sacrifice involves making heart breaking decisions, or giving up something we treasure so much, but we do so in hope for the sake of Allah SWT.

There would be many obstacles to stop us from doing good, including the whispering of Syaitan and our own weaknesses. But just as Ibrahim AS resisted the Syaitan and had faith in Allah SWT, we too must be brave and place our trust in Allah. Do not look to others, we must take the responsibility to do good deeds ourselves.

May Allah SWT give us tawfiq to make du'a to Him, and to put our trust in Allaah in all our affairs.

We also ask Allah SWT to gather us and our loved ones around the fountain of the Prophet , and to replace what we sacrificed in this dunya for Allah, with the everlasting rewards in Jannatul Firdaus. Ameen.

Second khutbah:

My dear respected brothers & sisters;

Another great incident where the above du'a was uttered was when one of the wives of the Prophet faced a major fitnah amongst her own people. When A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was accused with slander, she uttered in response:

I am sure many of us could identify with the hurt and distress if we were the subject of gossip and slander. In defence of A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), Allah SWT sent down certain verses of the Qur’an in Surat An-Noor, versus that we still recite to this day. This was an example of Allah's help, when we place our trust in Allah SWT, when we make sincere du'a from our hearts.

Let us use this dua in times of distress and hardship. We have high hope Allah SWT the Al-Wakeel (The Disposer of Affairs, The Guardian) would look after us and rectify our affairs, to provide for us a way out from all our problems and worries. Ameen.

Dua:
