Remover of My Sadness

Written on 11/29/2020

All praise is due to Allah SWT, Lord of the worlds, The Cherisher, The Sustainer.

May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his noble family, his companions and all those who follow their guidance till the Day of Reckoning.

My dear respected brothers & sisters;

This khutbah is a reminder for us to always be optimistic and have high hope in Allah SWT’s infinite Mercy; to never give in to feelings of despair.

Allah SWT says in Surah Al Baqarah:

“Therefore remember Me so that I may remember you, and be thankful to Me, and do not deny Me.”

(Quran 2:152)

Allah SWT is inviting us to remember Him and in return He will remember us. That is Allah’s promise. If we ever feel scared or lonely, remember Allah, say His name; we are never truly alone with Allah SWT with us.

Allah SWT says:

Verily, Allah is ever watchful over you.

(Quran 4:1)

Sometimes we feel very stressed and anxious, leading to irritability, poor sleep and loss of appetite.

Allah SWT says:

And We send down the Quran as a healing and mercy for the believers, but it only increases the wrongdoers in loss.

(Quran 17:82)

Therefore reading, and contemplating, the Quran is a healing for us. It is a medicine for our hearts. If we frequently feel very distressed or anxious without any obvious reason, ask ourselves when was the last time we opened the Quran. Our Ruh or spirit become agitated if we do not develop a relationship with Allah’s words. I remind myself first and foremost to make it a habit to read the Quran daily.

There are also times, especially during severe hardship that we may fall into despair and hopelessness. Allah SWT promises us in the Quran that whenever we undergo any hardship there is ease, conveyed clearly in this Ayah:

Indeed with hardship will be ease.

(Quran 94:6)

Even if we have committed many sins, Islam gives us reassurance of forgiveness and hope.

Allah SWT says:

And whoever does a wrong or wrongs himself but then seeks forgiveness of Allah will find Allah Forgiving and Merciful.

(Quran 4:110)

The Prophet  said: “If you were to not commit sins, Allah would remove you and replace you with a people who would commit sins and then seek Allah’s forgiveness, so Allah could forgive them.” (Muslim)

The Prophet  said, “Indeed Shaytan said, ‘My Lord, by Your Honor and Might! I will not stop misleading Your slaves as long as their souls remain in their bodies’. So Allah responded, ‘By My Honor, Might and Majesty, I will not stop forgiving them as long as they seek My forgiveness.’” (Ahmad)

My dear respected brothers & sisters;

During times of crisis, do not give up on the Mercy of Allah SWT the Most Kind , Most Merciful. The key is making plenty of istighfar, to constantly ask for Allah SWT’s forgiveness.

We ask Allah SWT to rectify our affairs and relieve any hardship.

Second khutbah:

Abdullah ibn Masood RA narrated that the Prophet  said:

"Whoever was afflicted with grief and distress and says (see the following Dua), Allah, the Exalted and Ever-Majestic, will remove his grief and will change his sorrow into happiness." It was said, "O Messenger of Allah! (Do) we have to learn these words?" He said, "Yes, whoever hears them should learn them:

“O Allah, I am your slave, the son of your slave. My forelock is in Your Hand. Your judgment of me is inescapable. Your trial of me is just. I am invoking You by all the names that You call Yourself, that You have taught to anyone in Your creation, that You have mentioned in Your Book, or that You have kept unknown. Let the Qur’an be delight of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my sadness and the pacifier of my worries” (Musnad Ahmad, 3704).

The Prophet  also recommended the following Dua for a believer feeling grief and hopeless:

“O Allah, I hope for Your mercy. Do not leave me to myself even for the blinking of an eye (i.e. a moment); and correct all of my affairs for me. There is none worthy of worship but You.”
(Abu Dawud 4/324, Ahmad 5/42)

May Allah SWT give us tawfiq to benefit from what has been shared today. Ameen.

Dua:
