Winter is the Easy Reward

Written on 12/04/2020

All praise is due to Allah SWT, Lord of the worlds, The Cherisher, The Sustainer.

May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad  his noble family, his companions and all those who follow their guidance till the Day of Reckoning.

Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) related from the narrations of Abu Sa’id al-Khudri RA from the Prophet : Winter is the springtime of the believer. Imam Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) has another version that states: Its nights are long so he spends them in worship, and its days are short so he fasts them.

My dear respected brothers & sisters;

Winter time can bring its challenges for doing ibadah, for example making the wudhu with freezing water, or spending time getting the car ready to drive safely to the masjid, but winter is also a blessing from Allah SWT.

Amir ibn Mas’ud RA reported: The Prophet  said, “Fasting in the winter is the easy reward.”

Meaning, we can get reward from Allah SWT with less effort. For that reason, winter is considered a blessing for the believers.

Remember the last few Ramadhans when we were fasting the long hot summer days? In winter, we can do fasting much more easily. For example, we can do the sunnah fasts of Mondays and Thursdays, or if someone needs to make up any missed obligatory fasts, this is the best time to do it.

Secondly, the Fajr prayers start late and Isya prayers start early, making it easy for us to complete the five obligatory prayers; just be careful as it is also easy to miss the prayers because time is very short between them.

Moreover, we should make use of the long nights to do extra ibadah, such as reading and contemplating the Quran and performing Tahajjud salah. Fajr can start as late as 6.45; we can wake up at 6.30 and still have time to perform 2 rakaats of Tahajjud. Remember the last 1/3 of the night (nowadays approximately from 2 am onwards) is a very blessed time, a time when Allah SWT draws close and responds to our dua.

Abu Huraira RA reported: The Messenger of Allah  said, “Our Lord descends to the lowest heaven in the last third of every night, and He says: Who is calling upon me that I may answer him? Who is asking from me that I may give him? Who is seeking my forgiveness that I may forgive him?”

Abdullah ibn Amr RA reported: The Messenger of Allah  said, “Verily, in Paradise are rooms whose outside can be seen from inside and whose inside can be seen from outside.” Abu Musa RA said, “Who are they for, O Messenger of Allah?” The Prophet  said, “For those who speak mildly, feed the hungry, and spend the night standing for the sake of Allah while people sleep.”

Abu Umamah RA reported: It was said, “O Messenger of Allah, which supplication will be heard best?” The Prophet  said, “One in the last part of the night and after the prescribed prayers.”

We ask Allah SWT to be amongst those who would benefit from the winter months, to accept our ibadah and answer our dua. Ameen.

Second khutbah:

Allah SWT says:

By time; indeed, mankind is in loss;

except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

My dear respected brothers & sisters;

Allah SWT swears by time signifying how precious time is. Our lives are getting shorter, and we are racing towards our kabar.

I remind myself first and foremost that just as we should make use of these long winter nights to get closer to Allah SWT, by doing more ibadah, we should not waste time. Every minute that passes we will not get back; for example we should minimise spending hours surfing the internet or going on social media, which are very addictive and make us forget that time is flying.

A great martial artist, Bruce Lee, once said: If you love life, don't waste time, for time is what life is made up of.

May Allah SWT give us tawfiq to benefit from what has been shared today. Ameen.

Dua:
