Darkness to Light

All praise is due to Allah SWT, Lord of the worlds, The Cherisher, The Sustainer.

May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his noble family, his companions and all those who follow their guidance till the Day of Reckoning.

My dear respected brothers & sisters;

Allah SWT mentions in the Quran the histories of certain Prophets (peace be upon them) for our benefit. InsyaAllah today we recall the mission of Prophet Yunus AS (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) where Allah SWT teaches us great lessons we can implement in our daily lives.

Allah SWT says:

And [mention] the man of the fish, when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree [anything] upon him. And he called out within the darknesses:

"There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers."

(Quran: 21:87)

Regarding this great dua:

Prophet Muhammad  said: No Muslim ever prays to his Lord with these words for anything, but He will answer his prayer.

Allah SWT ordered Yunus AS to call to his people, to give up their wicked ways and to turn to Allah. But they would not listen to his da’wah and after many years Yunus AS left them in anger.

He boarded a ship and set sail. But once at sea, a storm grew and the ship was in danger of sinking. In the end it was decided to throw one man overboard to save the ship. They drew lots three times, each time  indicating the same man, Yunus AS. As he entered the water, something extraordinary happened. Allah SWT sent a great fish, some described it as a whale, which swallowed Yunus AS whole and descended to the bottom of the sea.

He was engulfed by 3 types of darkness: the darkness of the creature’s stomach; the darkness of the deep sea; and the darkness of despair.

Allah SWT alone knows exactly what happened.

In the noble Qur’an, we read that Yunus AS  “cried through the darkness” and Allah SWT inspired the dua from the heart of Yunus AS;

The whale began to sing the praises of Allah SWT, followed by all the fish and creatures of the sea, each in its own way, until there was a great chorus of praise.

The whale swam  up to the surface and ejected Yunus AS safely onto the shore.

Allah SWT says:

And had he not been of those who exalt Allah,

He would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected.

(Quran 37:143-144)

Allah SWT caused a plant to grow and shade Yunus AS. Once he recovered, he returned home. He discovered that his people had turned to Allah SWT. His da'wah had got through to them after all.

Some lessons we can take from this great event are:

Acknowledge any sin and quickly make tawbah.

When Prophet Yunus AS realized his error, he made sajdah in the darkness and sought Allah SWT’s forgiveness. Indeed Allah loves those who return to Him.

Be patient when giving advice or dawah.

Even if it takes many years, continue to give advice with wisdom and gentleness. Trust in Allah. Just like the whale, Allah SWT can use us and any situation to achieve His will, beyond our imagination.

Never despair of Allah’s mercy.

In times of severe stress, we may become overwhelmed with despair. Hold firmly to Allah SWT. With every restriction will come relief. Allah SWT brought Yunus AS from darkness back into light, and ultimately gave him victory.

We ask Allah SWT to forgive us, our families and all of humanity, to save us from the darkness of despair and grant us relief from any distress. Ameen.

Second khutbah:

My dear respected brothers & sisters;

Another great lesson we can learn is the beauty of du’a and zikr.

Prophet Yunus AS was someone who praised Allah SWT greatly. According to narrations, when he called out to Allah SWT from the bottom of the ocean, the Angels recognised this as a familiar voice but from a different place.

Furthermore, in the darkness of the deep,

Prophet Yunus AS sensed the underwater creatures making zikr to Allah SWT.

Zikr is the easiest but often neglected ibadah, which can be done at any time, even without wudhu. Let us make the intentions to do more zikr regularly and consistently; to wake up in the silent darkness and make du'a to Allah SWT.

May the Angels become familiar with our voices through the constant remembrance of Allah SWT.

May Allah SWT give us tawfiq to benefit from what has been shared today. Ameen.

Dua:
