Trial of the Coronavirus 🦠 (COVID 19)

All praise is due to Allah SWT, Lord of the worlds, The Cherisher, The Sustainer.

May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his noble family, his companions and all those who follow their guidance till the Day of Reckoning.

My dear respected brothers & sisters;

We thank Allah SWT for giving us the opportunity of witnessing another day of Jummah. We ask Allah SWT for forgiveness and guidance and freedom from the Hell fire, for ourselves, our loved ones and all of humanity. Ameen

During these unprecedented times, our Jummah prayers are unique due to the COVID-19 pandemic. SubhanAllah many of our masjids are closed; some of us are praying almost in secret in small groups. This reminds us of the early days of Islam at the time of the Prophet Muhammad  and the companions, may Allah be pleased with them, when they had to practice the deen secretly behind closed doors. We should of course continue to follow public health advice when in congregational prayers.

Just as many people still remember what they were doing during historic events like 9/11, we should mark this pandemic in our memory as well.

Places of public gatherings including our masjids have to be shutdown to halt the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus. In this we learn many great lessons; first and foremost we catch a glimpse of Allah SWT’s power and attributes, when a small virus can force billions of people into isolation and grind the world economy to a halt. Allah is Al Aziz, Al Mutakabbir (The Mighty, The Majestic). We ask Allah SWT the Al Ghafur to forgive the whole of humanity.

Even the main masjids in Mecca and Madinah are affected. This shows how Allah SWT is completely independent of our worship; that Allah SWT is totally unreliant on the imams and the millions of worshippers. If the whole world were to obey Allah SWT, or if all of humanity were in disobedience, it does not have any impact whatsoever on Allah SWT’s Dominion, Might and Majesty. Allah is AsSammad, AlGhaniy (The Self Sufficient, The Independent).

Allah SWT is teaching us that our good deeds (such as our prayers, fasts, charity, zikr), are ultimately for our own benefit. Allah SWT does not need any favours from us, but we are completely dependent upon Allah SWT in all of our affairs.

Allah says:

And whoever strives only strives for [the benefit of] himself. Indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds.

(Quran 29:6)

Another important lesson is regarding sincerity in our worship of Allah SWT. Unfortunately, the religion is in danger of becoming another ‘business’. Our deen, our masjids, charities and even the Hajj are affected. Ibadah and money are getting mixed up.

With the trial of the COVID-19 virus, we have the opportunity to start afresh, do muhasabah and examine our hearts, our intentions when doing our ibadah; to worship Allah SWT with due sincerity.

Allah says:

He is the Ever-Living; there is no deity except Him, so call upon Him, [being] sincere to Him in religion. [All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds.

(Quran 40:65)

My dear respected brothers & sisters;

We may have heard of the hadith regarding the martyr who claimed he fought in the cause of Allah, the ‘alim who claimed he taught knowledge and the Quran, and the wealthy person who gave in charity. A martyr, 'alim and a charitable person: 3 great positions in Islam but these 3 were humiliated and punished by Allah SWT by being thrown into the hellfire because their intentions were corrupt; not being sincere with Allah SWT.

We then compare this to the other great hadith whereby a prostitute took pity on a starving dog and provided it with some water, and she was forgiven by Allah SWT.

May Allah SWT give us true sincerity in our worship, and purify our hearts of any ulterior motives and corruption amidst this pandemic.

Second khutbah:

Dear respected brothers and sisters;

Sadly many of us have lost loved ones, family and friends, during this pandemic. Such is the way of life; the Sunnah of Allah SWT upon His creatures.

Allah says:

Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.

(Quran 3:190)

Let us make the intention now to make tawbah and to forgive one another, as we might not have another opportunity. Death can come at any moment.

May Allah SWT give us tawfiq to benefit from what has been shared today. Ameen.

Dua:
