The Three Jewels

Written on 02/18/2021

Indeed all praise is due to Allah; we seek His help, and we seek His forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our souls and the evil of our actions. Whomsoever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whomsoever Allah misguides, none can guide. We bear witness there is no diety worthy of worship except for Allah, the One Who has no partner, and we bear witness that Muhammad  is His servant and messenger.

May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him (ﷺ), his noble family, his companions and all those who follow their guidance till the Day of Reckoning.

My dear respected brothers & sisters;

Today's khutbah is a short reminder about the three jewels of the Quran, the last three chapters or commonly referred to as the '3 Quls'.

Through Allah's wisdom and mercy, these are amongst the shortest and earliest surahs we learn as children, but are also the most important.

Allah SWT says:

Say, "He is Allah, The One and Only;

Allah, the Eternal; Absolute;

He begets not, nor is He begotten;

And there is none like unto Him."

(Quran 112: 1-4)

Regarding this surah, Abu Huraira RA reported: I met with the Prophet  and he heard a man reciting the verses, “Say: He is Allah, the One, the Eternal Refuge,” (112:1-2). The Prophet ﷺ said, “It is necessary for him.” I said, “What is necessary?” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Paradise.”

Anas ibn Malik RA reported: A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, I love this chapter, ‘Say: He is Allah, the One,’” (112:1). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Your love for it will admit you into Paradise.”

Mu’adh ibn Anas RA reported: The Prophet  said, “Whoever recites the chapter ten times completely, ‘He is Allah, the One’ (112:1), Allah will build a palace for him in Paradise.

Al-Bukhari reported in his Sahih that Abu Said Al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet told the companions: "Are you not able to read a third of the Qur'an in one night? They found this very difficult and replied that nobody amongst us can do so. Then the Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah, The One, the Self sufficient "Surah Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad equals a third of the Qur'an."

Muslim also reported that Abu Al Darda narrated: "Say, He is Allah, The One, (Surah 112) equals a third of the Qur'an." reported by Al-Thirmidhi, and Al- Albani classified it as an authentic Hadith.

May Allah SWT give us tawfiq to appreciate the true value of this jewel of the Quran. Ameen.

Second khutbah:

Abdullah ibn Khubayb RA reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Speak.” I said, “What should I say?” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Say: He is Allah, the One, (112:1) and the two chapters of refuge, al-Falaq and al-Nas, every evening and morning three times. They will be enough for you against everything.”

Ibn ‘Abis al-Juhani RA reported: The Messenger of Allah  said to him, “O Ibn ‘Abis, shall I not tell you about the best way to seek refuge for those who seek it?” He said, “Of course, O Messenger of Allah.” The Prophet said, “These two chapters: Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak (113:1) and, Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of the people (114:1).”

Aisha RA reported: When the Messenger of Allah  lie down for sleep, he would blow into his hands, recite the two chapters of refuge, al-Falaq and al-Nas, and he ﷺ would wipe his hands over his body.

Abu Sa’id RA reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would seek refuge from jinn and the evil eye of man, until the two chapters of refuge were revealed, al-Falaq and al-Nas. After they were revealed, he held to both of them and left everything else.

May Allah SWT give us tawfiq to benefit from what has been shared today. Ameen.

Dua:

Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.

(Quran 16:90)
