Indeed all praise is due to Allah; we seek His help, and we seek His forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our souls and the evil of our actions. Whomsoever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whomsoever Allah misguides, none can guide. We bear witness there is no diety worthy of worship except for Allah, the One Who has no partner, and we bear witness that Muhammad ﷺ is His servant and messenger.
O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].
(Quran 3: 102)
O humanity! Be mindful of your Lord Who created you from a single soul, and from it He created its mate, and through both He spread countless men and women. And be mindful of Allah—in Whose Name you appeal to one another—and honour family ties. Surely Allah is ever Watchful over you.
O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice.
He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.
(Quran 33: 70-71)
The truest of word is the Book of Allah and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad ﷺ. The worst of things are those that are newly invented; every newly-invented thing is an innovation, and every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the Fire.
May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his noble family, his companions and all those who follow their guidance till the Day of Qiamah.
Allah SWT says:
The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.
(Quran 2: 185)
Dear respected brothers and sisters;
Alhamdulillah, we thank Allah SWT for the opportunity to experience the blessed day of Jummah, in the blessed month of Ramadhan. May Allah allow us to complete this Ramadhan and elevate greatly our iman and taqwa in the process, Ameen.
Many of us are experiencing another different Ramadhan than what we are traditionally used to; the main ritual we are doing different is praying the tarawikh salah at home. We remind ourselves that this is the Qadr of Allah SWT; inshaAllah we will be rewarded for our Sabr (patience/steadfastness) in respecting public health guidelines, for our own health, family members as well as others.
Rather than focus on what we cannot do, let us focus on what we can.
Let us take this opportunity Allah SWT is giving us to be more active and diverse in our ibadah. For example, some of us may have become complacent in previous years, being almost totally dependent upon the Imam to read the whole Quran during tarawikh, but we do not make much effort otherwise. Thus we may end up finishing Ramadhan without understanding even a few Ayat of our Noble Book. InshaAllah we would have been rewarded for hearing the Quran but did we gain better understanding? Have we ever in our lives actually read the translation of the whole Quran?
So let us make a strong intention this Ramadhan to nurture our relationship with the Book of Allah, for example by reflecting on some of the meanings, perhaps starting with our favourite surahs. We can try to improve our recitation and tajweed, by following some of the Qari on line or apps. In addition we can sit with our siblings,
spouse or children and read a few Ayat together with their meanings. Furthermore there would be many on line talks, seminars and videos by highly regarded scholars every day of Ramadhan, discussing the Quran and other aspects of Islam, all available freely to be accessed safely at home.
If we have the intention and make the effort, there would be more than enough activities to boost our spiritual wellbeing. Have the intention of making our homes places of ibadah, and perform the tarawikh salah as best we can with our own families. Make this Ramadhan a very personal journey in nurturing our relationship with Allah SWT, as the pandemic forces us to slow down and reflect. InshaAllah let us make this our best Ramadhan yet.
Anas ibn Malik RA reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Do good deeds in the time that you have and take advantage of the moments of gentle breeze from the Mercy of Allah. Verily, Allah has moments of gentle breeze from His Mercy that He sends upon whomever He wills among His servants. Ask Allah to cover your faults and protect you from your anxieties.”
Therefore even in this great trial of Covid19 pandemic, with many suffering ill health and sadly losing loved ones, we must acknowledge the Great Mercy of Allah SWT and take every advantage of the time that we have to do as many good deeds as we can.
My dear respected brothers & sisters;
We are just a few short days into Ramadhan. Already, our bodies are rapidly adjusting to the drastic changes in our food intake, the different meal times and sleeping patterns.
A good practice at this early stage is to check your body weight (compared to your ideal weight based on your normal Body Mass Index or BMI). With better eating habits that fasting should promote, this is the ideal opportunity to tackle obesity (a very common disease amongst our communities).
With a moderate food intake when breaking our fast, we should experience a decrease in weight. Unfortunately many of us actually gain weight during Ramadhan despite hours upon hours of fasting. We joke about this with our friends and colleagues although it is no laughing matter.
Our health is so important, as people who are sick can testify. So let us use this Ramadhan as a means to tackle obesity and all its complications, to start shedding those extra few pounds and InshaAllah being more healthy after Ramadhan as well.
‘Ubaydullah ibn Mihsan RA reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever amongst you wakes up secure in his property, healthy in his body, and he has his food for the day, it is as if he were given the entire world.”
May Allah SWT give us tawfiq to benefit from what has been shared today. Ameen.
Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.
