Ramadhan 3rd Jummah: Laylatul Qadr

Written on 04/29/2021

Indeed all praise is due to Allah; we seek His help, and we seek His forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our souls and the evil of our actions. Whomsoever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whomsoever Allah misguides, none can guide. We bear witness there is no diety worthy of worship except for Allah, the One Who has no partner, and we bear witness that Muhammad  is His servant and messenger.

O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].

(Quran 3: 102)

O humanity! Be mindful of your Lord Who created you from a single soul, and from it He created its mate, and through both He spread countless men and women. And be mindful of Allah—in Whose Name you appeal to one another—and honour family ties. Surely Allah is ever Watchful over you.

(Quran 4:1)

O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice.
He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.
(Quran 33: 70-71)

The truest of word is the Book of Allah and best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammadﷺ. The worst of things are those that are newly invented; every newly-invented thing is an innovation and every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the Fire.

May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad , his noble family, his companions and all those who follow their guidance till the Day of Qiamah.

Dear respected brothers and sisters;

The long awaited period is coming; the last 10 nights of Ramadhan and Laylatul Qadr (the Night of Power or Decree).

Allah SWT says:

Indeed, We sent the Qur'an down during the Night of Decree.

And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree?

The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.

The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter.

Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.

(Quran 97: 1-5)

We all know the importance of this night; a time to reap unimaginable rewards, whereby a single act of worship is blessed with more than a lifetime's worth of reward. One salah, one sadaqah, one SubhanAllah, or one chapter of the Quran is rewarded greatly, only Allah knows by how much.

Aisha RA reported: When the last ten nights of Ramadan arrived, the Prophet ﷺ would tighten his belt, spend the night in worship, and awaken his family.

In another narration, Aisha RA said: The Prophet (ﷺ) would exert himself in worship during the last ten nights of Ramadan more so than any other time.

‘Ubadah ibn al-Samit RA reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to inform people about the Night of Decree in Ramadhan, but two Muslim men were insulting each other. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Verily, I have come out to tell you about the Night of Decree, but two men were insulting each other. Thus, its knowledge was removed and perhaps it is better for you. Look for it during the seventh, ninth, or fifth night of the last ten nights.”

How do we ensure we do not miss this golden opportunity? Our advice is to increase our acts of ibadah now so we would be accustomed to doing them; imagine every night is Laylatul Qadr from tonight and do not take the risk of only doing ibadah in the calculated odd nights, and certainly not just the calculated 27th night.

Our recommendation is to make dua and ask Allah to grant us this blessed night, to pray the Tahajjud salah every night, read some Quran, do zikr and spend in charity every night in these last 10 nights; and Allah SWT knows best.

May Allah SWT accept our dua and ibadah, and allow us to reap the rewards in Laylatul Qadr. Ameen.

Second khutbah:

Dear respected brothers and sisters;

If we were to do only one specific dua in the last 10 nights, which dua should we make?

Aisha RA reported: I said, “O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), if I know which night is the Night of Decree, what should I say during it?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Say: O Allah, You are pardoning and generous. You love to forgive, so forgive me.”

We hope to complete this Ramadhan with all our sins forgiven and wiped clean by Allah SWT.

May Allah SWT give us tawfiq to benefit from what has been shared today. Ameen.

Dua:

Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.

(Quran 16:90)
