The Martyrs

Written on 05/21/2021

Indeed all praise is due to Allah; we seek His help, and we seek His forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our souls and the evil of our actions. Whomsoever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whomsoever Allah misguides, none can guide. We bear witness there is no diety worthy of worship except for Allah, the One Who has no partner, and we bear witness that Muhammad  is His servant and messenger.

O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].

(Quran 3: 102)

O humanity! Be mindful of your Lord Who created you from a single soul, and from it He created its mate, and through both He spread countless men and women. And be mindful of Allah—in Whose Name you appeal to one another—and honour family ties. Surely Allah is ever Watchful over you.

(Quran 4:1)

O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice.

He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.

(Quran 33: 70-71)

The truest of word is the Book of Allah and best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The worst of things are those that are newly invented; every newly-invented thing is an innovation, and every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the Fire.

May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad , his noble family, his companions and all those who follow their guidance till the Day of Qiamah.

Dear respected brothers and sisters;

Alhamdulillah we thank Allah SWT for allowing us to witness this day of Jummah, and to pray our Jummah prayer in safety and security.

Whilst we enjoy this blessing, our brothers and

sisters in many parts of the world

(namely Palestine, Kashmir, Yemen, China, Chechnya, Myanmar as examples) have been under severe persecution, facing acts of unspeakable brutalityand aggression from much more powerful neighbours, being killed, severely injured, abused, experiencing illness, starvation and heart breaking loss of loved ones.

The victims are not only the soldiers who include young men, who take up arms in self defence, but also many innocent civilians; children, women and the elderly.

In the face of such devastation, we take comfort in the words of Allah SWT in the Quran.

Allah SWT says:

And do not say about those who are killed in the way of Allah, "They are dead." Rather, they are alive, but you perceive [it] not.

(Quran 2: 154)

And Allah SWT says:

And never think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision.

(Quran 3:169)

Masruq Rahimahullah reported: We asked Abdullah ibn Mas’ud RA about the verse, “Do not think those who are killed in the way of Allah are dead. Rather, they are alive with their provision, in the presence of their Lord.”
(Quran 3:169)

Abdullah RA said: We asked the Prophet  about this verse and he  said, “The souls of martyrs are alive in the bodies of green birds who have their nests in chandeliers hanging from the Throne of the Almighty. They eat the fruits of Paradise from wherever they wish and they nestle among these chandeliers. Once their Lord cast a glance at them and He said: Do you want anything? They said: What more could we desire? We eat the fruit of Paradise from wherever we wish. Their Lord asked them the same question three times. When they saw that they will continue to be asked, they said: O Lord, we wish that you could return our souls to our bodies so that we could be martyred in your way once again. When Allah saw that they had no needs, He left them to enjoy.”

In another narration, Abu Huraira RA reported: The Pharaoh pinned down his wife, Asiyah peace be upon her, with four spikes in her hands and feet (for standing up to him in her iman to Allah SWT). When they left her, the angels provided her with shade. Asiyah, peace be upon her, said,

“...O Lord, build me a house in Paradise with You, and save me from Pharaoh and his deeds, and save me from the oppressive people,”

(Quran 66:11).
Thus, her house in Paradise was revealed to her.

Dear respected brothers and sisters;

Besides the ones who are killed in the way of Allah, there are others who would be regarded as Shuhada. Jabir ibn ‘Atik RA reported: The Messenger of Allah  said, “There are seven martyrs besides one who is killed in the way of Allah: the victim of plague is a martyr, the one who drowns is a martyr, the one who dies of chest pain is a martyr, the one who dies of stomach infection is a martyr, the one who burns to death is a martyr, the one who is crushed under something is a martyr, and the pregnant woman who dies giving labor is a martyr.”

Trauma, serious infections, illnesses and complications of childbirth are tragedies we hear about often. Through the Mercy and Wisdom of Allah SWT, calamity and tragedy in this life may be the means of the victims attaining ultimate success in the next, which is Jannah.

Abu Huraira RA reported: The Messenger of Allah  said (regarding Janah):

Allah said: I have prepared for my righteous servants what no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no heart has perceived.

And Allah SWT says:

For them therein is whatever they wish, abiding eternally, a promise binding upon your Lord that must be fulfilled.

(Quran 25:16)

We ask Allah SWT for forgiveness, to relieve the suffering of our Ummah, and to grant us and our loved ones Jannatul Firdaus. Ameen.

Second khutbah:

Dear respected brothers & sisters;

Before we say our final goodbyes to Ramadhan, we would like to mention this hadith to help lift our spirits and hopes for goodness in the afterlife.

‘Amr ibn Murrah RA reported: A man came to the Prophet  and he said, “O Messenger of Allah, what do you think if I testify there is no God but Allah and you are the Messenger of Allah, I perform the five prayers, I pay the obligatory alms, I fast the month of Ramadan and stand for prayer in it. Among whom will I be?” The Prophet said, “Among the truthful and the martyrs.”

May Allah SWT also include us and our loved ones amongst the truthful, the martyrs, the Prophets of Allah, AS.

I remind myself first and foremost to remember our brothers and sisters, and all creation of Allah who are suffering, in our dua and to support them by giving sadakah.

May Allah SWT give us tawfiq to benefit from what has been shared today. Ameen.

Dua:

Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.

(Quran 16:90)
