All praise is due to Allah SWT, Lord of the worlds, The Cherisher, The Sustainer.
May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his noble family, his companions and all those who follow their guidance till the Day of Reckoning.
My dear respected brothers & sisters;
Abu Sa’id al-Khudri RA reported: Some people from the Ansar asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for charity and he ﷺ gave them. Then they asked for charity again and he ﷺ gave them. Then they asked again and he ﷺ gave them until all he ﷺ had was gone. The Prophet ﷺ said, “If I had anything, I would not withhold it. Whoever refrains from asking others, then Allah will make him content. Whoever would be independent, then Allah will make him independent. Whoever would be patient, then Allah will make him patient. There is no gift that is better and more comprehensive than patience.”
Here the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ beautifully illustrated the concept of Sabar, which is
interconnected with being resilient, independent, and of contentment.
Having Sabar is not by being passive, inactive, asking and waiting for gifts from others. Sabar is having the perseverance, resilience and fortitude to work hard, and relying only upon Allah SWT for assistance.
Sabar is to accept any set backs or difficulties with a positive attitude and finding solutions to problems. It is through setbacks and errors that we improve ourselves.
Many are quick to complain or point out errors; whilst others give up at the first sign of difficulty, being content of being dependent on, and getting help of other people.
Dear brothers and sisters;
Being successful is not easy. If you are a student preparing for examinations, or working to earn a decent living, hard work and sacrifice are necessary. Having Sabar to persevere, along with dua, are important.
Let us look at one of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as an example:
When the emigrants reached Medina, Allah's Apostle ﷺ established the bond of fraternity between 'Abdur-Rahman bin Awf and Sad bin Ar-Rabi (RA). Sad RA said to 'Abdur-Rahman RA, "I am the richest of all the Ansar, so I want to divide my property (between us), and I have two wives, so see which of the two you like and tell me, so that I may divorce her, and when she finishes her prescribed period (i.e. 'Idda) of divorce, then marry her." Abdur-Rahman RA said, "May Allah bless your family and property for you; where is your market?" So they showed him the Qainuqa' market. (He went there and) returned with a profit in the form of dried yogurt and butter. He continued going (to the market) till one day he came, bearing the traces of yellow scent. The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What is this (scent)?" He replied, "I got married." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "How much Mahr did you give her?" He replied, "I gave her a date-stone of gold or a gold piece equal to the weight of a date-stone." (The narrator, Ibrahim, is in doubt as to which is correct).
It would have been perfectly acceptable for 'Abdur-Rahman bin Awf RA to accept the initial offer, as other companions did. But he decided not to accept the free gift; instead he chose to work hard and remain independent, and Allah SWT blessed him with success, becoming one of the richest man in history. In addition, his story is recorded as inspiration for us all until today.
As the Prophet ﷺ said, "...Whoever refrains from asking others, then Allah will make him content. Whoever would be independent, then Allah will make him independent. Whoever would be patient, then Allah will make him patient. There is no gift that is better and more comprehensive than patience.”
May Allah SWT gives us true understanding of Sabar and make us independent of all others except for Allah SWT. Ameen.
Dear brothers and sisters;
Sabar also encompasses discipline; the discipline of avoiding sin, to control our tongues to say only that is right, and using our hands to do only good.
Aswad ibn Asram RA reported: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, instruct me.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Can you control your tongue?” I said, “But what do I control if I cannot control my tongue?” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Can you control your hands?” I said, “But what do I control if I cannot control my hands?” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Do not say anything on your tongue except what is right, and do not stretch out your hand except to do good.”
May Allah SWT give us tawfiq to benefit from what has been shared today. Ameen.
Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.
