Friday Prayer

Written on 08/05/2021

All praise is due to Allah SWT, Lord of the worlds, The Cherisher, The Sustainer.  May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad , his noble family, his companions and all those who follow their guidance till the Day of Qiamah.

Alhamdulillah, we thank Allah SWT for allowing us to witness another Jummah, and to gather us here today to attend the Jummah prayer.

As we are aware, Jummah is the most special day of the week in Islam, and the Jummah prayer is of great importance.

Aws ibn Aws, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Verily, the best of your days is Friday. Adam was created on it, on it he died, on it the trumpet will be blown, and on it the shout will be made. Thus, send blessings upon me often, for your blessings are presented to me.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, how are our blessings presented to you after you have decayed?” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Verily, Allah Almighty has forbidden the earth from consuming the bodies of the prophets.” SubhanAllah!

Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “When Friday arrives, angels are over the door of every mosque to record those who arrive one by one. When the Imam sits to begin, they close their scrolls and come to listen to the reminder. The parable of one who comes early is that of one who offers a fine camel, the next like one who offers a cow, the next like one who offers a ram, the next like one who offers a chicken, the next like one who offers an egg.”

Therefore, let us make the extra effort to organise our week, our daily schedule, in order to be able to comfortably attend the Jummah prayer at an early time and get extra blessings from Allah SWT, InshaAllah.

By attending the Jummah prayer, our sins will also be forgiven by Allah SWT.

Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever performs ablution in an excellent manner, comes to Friday prayer, and listens while remaining quiet, his sins will be forgiven until the next Friday and an additional three days...".

Dear respected brothers and sisters;

From the previous hadith, one of the most virtuous acts of ibadah we can do on a Friday is to send salawat or durood upon our beloved Prophet .

We have mentioned some of the benefits in more detail in a previous khutbah. In summary, our salawat is presented by the angels to the Prophet , who responds back. Allah SWT would also send 10 blessings upon us, answer our dua, forgive our sins, and raise our ranks.

Allah SWT says:

Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace.

(Quran 33:56)

Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Increase your supplications for me on the day and night of Friday. Whoever blesses me once, Allah will bless him ten times.”

Another act of ibadah we should develop every Friday is reading Surat al-Kahf.

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: The Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever recites Surat al-Kahf on Friday will have a light between this Friday and the next.”

May Allah SWT bless us and our family on this blessed day of Jummah, forgive our sins and rectify our affairs. Ameen.

Second khutbah:

Dear respected brothers & sisters;

Some of the recommendations when attending Jummah prayer include:

  • Taking a bath or shower
  • Wearing our better clothes
  • Applying nice scent or perfume
  • Being on our best behaviour in terms of manners and speech
  • Not causing trouble to other people, especially the neighbours and       congregation
  • Arriving early, calmly and without rushing

Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “When the prayer is established, do not come to it running, but rather come to it walking. You must be calm, for if you reach it in time, you may pray it. If you miss anything of it, you may complete it.”

In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ said, “Verily, when you are deliberately walking to prayer, you are in a state of prayer.”

Therefore, let us take the advice from this hadith and avoid rushing to the mosque. If we are late due to something we could not avoid, then we are not at fault. But if we are late due to our own error, and try to compensate by rushing and driving fast, then we are making two mistakes.

I remind myself first and foremost that speeding is very dangerous, is against the law and may lead to serious injuries and fatalities. Let us make strong intentions from today to make effort to arrive calmly at the mosque, park our cars properly, and be on our best behaviour in the House of Allah.

May Allah SWT give us tawfiq to benefit from what has been shared today. Ameen.

Dua:
