All praise is due to Allah SWT, Lord of the worlds, The Cherisher, The Sustainer.
May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad
, his noble family, his companions and all those who follow their guidance till the Day of Qiamah.

Dear respected brothers & sisters;

Alhamdulillah, we thank Allah SWT for gathering us here, on the blessed day of Jummah. We pray to Allah SWT to allow us to be better people, in terms of taqwa and character, this Jummah compared to previously, that we are constantly progressing and moving forward from Jummah to Jummah.

We also pray that Allah SWT save us from being stagnant, and indeed save us from being worse in our deen, worse in our character, as time moves swiftly forward, propelling us towards our kabar.

InshaAllah, we would like to mention today the concept of Tazkiyyah, or purification of the heart.

Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah  and he ﷺ said, “Coming upon you now is a man from the people of Paradise.”

A man from the Ansar came whose beard was dishevelled by the water of ablution and he was carrying both of his shoes with his left hand.

The next day, the Prophet ﷺ repeated the same words, and the man came in the same condition. The third day the Prophet ﷺ repeated the same again, and the man came in the same condition. When the Prophet  stood up to leave, Abdullah ibn Amr followed the man and he said, “I am in a dispute with my father and I have sworn not to enter my home for three days. May I stay with you?” The man said yes.

Abdullah stayed three nights with the man but he never saw him praying at night. Whenever he went to bed, he would remember Allah and rest until he woke up for morning prayer. Abdullah said that he never heard anything but good words from his mouth.

When three nights had passed and he did not see anything special about his actions, Abdullah asked him, “O servant of Allah, I have not been in dispute with my father nor have I cut relations with him. I heard the Prophet ﷺ say three times that a man from the people of Paradise was coming to us and then you came. I thought I should stay with you to see what you are doing that I should follow, but I did not see you do anything special. Why did the Prophet ﷺ speak highly of you?” The man said, “I am as you have seen.”

When Abdullah was about to leave, the man said, “I am as you have seen, except that I do not find dishonesty in my soul towards the Muslims and I do not envy anyone because of the good that Allah has given them.” Abdullah said, “This is what you have achieved and it is something we have not accomplished.”

Respected brothers and sisters;

Amongst the wisdom we can learn from the above hadith, is the concept of Tazkiyyah. The above man who was guaranteed Jannah strove to purify his heart from any envy, suspicion or hatred towards others.

Outwardly, he did not display any extra worship or special actions that we normally associate with being pious.

Ultimately, Allah SWT looks into our hearts, and it is the purity of our hearts which is most important in achieving true success.

Allah SWT says:

...But only one who comes to Allah with a sound heart.

(Quran 26: 89)

We ask Allah SWT to purify our hearts, and grant us true success in this life and the hereafter. Ameen.

Second khutbah:

Imam Al-Shafi’i, may Allah have mercy on him, wrote in his poetry, “When I forgave and stopped holding malice (bitterness or resentment) against anyone, I relieved my soul of the worries of enmity.”

Respected brothers and sisters;

Living as part of a society, it is likely we would encounter people who say or do things that cause us hurt and distress, including our own family and friends. It is part of life. Unfortunately resentment can breed hatred and cause many years of suffering.

But if we are patient and train ourselves to forgive, we actually relieve our hearts from a big burden that can lead to stress and anxiety. By doing Tazkiyyah (or striving to purify our hearts) we hope to be amongst those that are guaranteed Jannah, inshaAllah.

Allah SWT knows best. May Allah SWT give us tawfiq to benefit from what has been shared today. Ameen.

Dua:
