Purification of the Soul

All praise is due to Allah SWT, Lord of the worlds, The Cherisher, The Sustainer.
May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad
, his noble family, his companions and all those who follow their guidance till the Day of Qiamah.

Dear respected brothers & sisters;

Alhamdulillah we praise Allah SWT for the blessings of Jummah, for providing us good health and the opportunity to gather here in this masjid.

In the previous khutbah, we mentioned the concept of Tazkiyyah or purification of the heart. We discussed the hadith where a man was guaranteed Jannah for purifying his heart of any malice, jealousy or suspicion towards others. Paradise was for him, even though he did not display any obvious outwardly signs of piety.

Allah SWT says:

He has succeeded who purifies the soul, and he has failed who corrupts the soul.

(Quran Surah Ash-Shams 91:9-10)

In a narration, reported by Abdullah ibn Mu’awiyah, may Allah be pleased with him: A man said, “What is purification of the soul?”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “That one knows Allah Almighty is with him wherever he is.”

On saying the above, are there any actions that we could do, according to the Quran and Sunnah, that could help us in getting closer to purify our hearts? What are some of the practical steps we could do to attain Tazkiyyah?

Firstly, is through remembrance of Allah SWT through our salah, dua and daily azkar.

Allah SWT says:

He has succeeded who purifies himself, who remembers the name of his Lord and prays.

(Quran Surah Al-A’la 87:14-15)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would purify his heart every morning and evening by performing supplications and prayers.

When we make dua, remember to ask Allah to guide others, as this removes malice and hatred from our hearts and makes us love others for the sake of Allah.

The next method we can use to purify our hearts is to give in charity and perform good deeds for others.

Allah SWT says:

But the righteous one will avoid Hellfire, who gives from his wealth to purify himself.

(Quran Surah Al-Layl 92:17-18)

Charity not only means giving wealth, but also giving people your time, your effort, your work, and even a smile or a kind word.

Jabir ibn Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

Every good deed is charity. Verily, it is a good deed to meet your brother with a smiling face, and to pour what is left from your bucket into the vessel of your brother.

The next method towards achieving Tazkiyyah is through repentance, by doing frequent istighfar and avoiding sin.

When a Muslim commits a sin, his or her heart is covered by a stain, but it is removed by repentance and good deeds.

Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, reported:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

Verily, when the believer commits a sin, a black spot appears upon his heart. If he repents and abandons the sin and seeks forgiveness, his heart will be polished, but if he increases in sin, the blackness increases…..

The next method is through fasting.

‘Amr ibn Shurahbil
, may Allah be pleased with him, reported:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

Shall I tell you about what will rid the heart of impurities? Fasting three days of every month.

Another method is through the guarding of our speech.

Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, reported:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

Do not speak too much without remembering Allah. Verily, too much talking without remembering Allah hardens the heart. The furthest of people from Allah is one with a hard heart.

These are some of the practical steps we can do in order to achieve Tazkiyyah inshaAllah. We ask Allah SWT to make them easy for us and to forgive our sins.

Second khutbah:

Dear respected brothers & sisters;

In conclusion, purification of the heart (Tazkiyyah) can be achieved, inshaAllah, through performing our salah, making sincere dua, acts of charity, repentance and avoiding sin, fasting and guarding our speech.

We must remember that we will be judged by Allah SWT on the Day of Resurrection according to the purity of our hearts and the righteousness of our deeds.

Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, reported:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

Verily, Allah does not look at your appearance or wealth, but rather He looks at your hearts and actions.

Allah SWT knows best.

May Allah SWT give us tawfiq to benefit from what has been shared today. Ameen.

Dua:
