A Hundred Grains

Written on 01/27/2022

All praise is due to Allah SWT, Lord of the worlds, The Cherisher, The Sustainer.
May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad
, his noble family, his companions and all those who follow their guidance till the Day of Qiamah.

Dear respected brothers & sisters;

Alhamdulillah, we thank Allah SWT for the blessings of Jummah and for allowing us to gather here today.

We remind ourselves to fear Allah SWT as He should be feared. Fear Allah in all places and in all situations, at home and at work, in public and in private, and do not transgress His limits.

InshaAllah today's khutbah is on sadaqah (charity). Charity has many forms, one of which is the spending of wealth.

Giving away our money to those in need is one of the beautiful signs of our faith in Allah. Giving sadaqah is a truly practical manifestation of Islam, and it benefits both the giver and the receiver.

Allah SWT says:

(As translated in Surah Al-Baqarah)

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

(Quran 2: 261)

An act of charity, even seemingly simple, but given in good faith and sincerity, can result in multiple goodness, and be far reaching in ways we cannot even imagine. Such as a seed can grow and develop into hundreds of grains, so does a donation. A single donation may, for example, help an orphan child finish school, which then lead to a decent job, halal earnings and open doors for him or her in many other ways.

Sadaqah benefits the giver in this world and the next. Logically one may feel they are losing money if they give it away for charity. But such is the way of Allah SWT the Most Generous, that giving charity is one sure way of increasing our wealth.

Allah SWT says:

(As translated in another verse in Surah

Al-Baqarah)

Allah destroys interest and gives increase for charities. And Allah does not like every sinning disbeliever.
(Quran 2: 276)

Many successful people of this world testify that charity is a vital way of maintaining their success. InshaAllah, our rizq will increase and have more barrakah with charity.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah  said:

“Allah said: ‘Spend, O son of Adam, and I shall spend on you.’”

Notice that 'O son of Adam' is referred to here by Allah, meaning any generous person, whether Muslim or not, would receive Allah's reward and blessings; and Allah SWT knows best.

Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: A man came to the Prophet  and said, “O Messenger of Allah, which charity has the greatest reward?”
The Prophet
said, “That you give charity while you are healthy, feeling greedy, fearing poverty, and hoping to be rich. Do not delay giving until you are on your deathbed, then say give to such a person. It already belongs to that person.”

May Allah SWT Al-Kareem, the Most Generous, inspire us to be amongst those who are also generous. Ameen.

Second khutbah:

Dear respected brothers & sisters;

Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported:

The Messenger of Allah  said, “The best charity is what you give when you are independent; start by spending on your dependents.”

Alhamdulillah, Islam is a balanced way of life. Sometimes in our zeal to help other people, we neglect those closest to us. So let us be generous with our loved ones, our wives and children, our siblings and close family, and continue our efforts in helping others.

And Allah SWT knows best.

May Allah SWT give us tawfiq to benefit from what has been shared today. Ameen.

Dua:
