Door of Dua

Written on 03/17/2022

All praise is due to Allah SWT, Lord of the worlds, The Cherisher, The Sustainer.
May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad
, his noble family, his companions and all those who follow their guidance till the Day of Qiamah.

Dear respected brothers & sisters;

Alhamdulillah, we thank Allah SWT for the blessings of Jummah and for allowing us to gather here today.

We remind ourselves to fear Allah SWT as He should be feared. Fear Allah in all places and in all situations, at home and at work, in public and in private, and do not transgress His limits.

As we move ever closer to Ramadhan, let us remind ourselves, inshaAllah, about the importance of dua.

Dua is the essence of ibadah. Indeed, dua is a direct communication between us and Allah SWT, when we acknowledge our helpless state, and hope for Allah's bounty.

Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: The Prophet  said, “Nothing is more honorable to Allah Almighty than dua.”

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him reported:

The Prophet  said, “There is no Muslim who calls upon Allah, without sin or cutting family ties, but that Allah will give him one of three answers: either He SWT will quickly fulfill his dua, or He SWT will store it for him for the Akhirah, or He SWT will divert an evil from him similar to it.” The companions said, “In that case we will ask for more.”

The Prophet  said, “Allah has even more.”

From this hadith, we note the 2 conditions for making dua: avoiding sin and keeping family ties.

No Muslim is without sin, therefore let us make plenty of istighfar and sincere tawbah to Allah SWT, inshaAllah Allah will repond to our dua. We should also seek forgiveness from any people we may have wronged, and give them their rights.

Secondly, we should make effort to honour family ties even though conflict or argument may arise, which is common in family life.

In another narration, Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, reported:

The Messenger of Allah  said, “No supplication a servant can say is better than this: O Allah, I ask You for wellness (Afiah) in the world and in the Hereafter.”

Afiah covers many levels of goodness, including health, wealth, safety and security.

For example, we can make the dua:

"O Allah, I ask You for wellness in this world and in the Hereafter."

Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him reported:

The Messenger of Allah  said, “Whoever among you opens the door of dua, the door of Rahmah (mercy) is opened for him. Allah is not asked for anything more beloved to Him than to be asked for Afiah (wellbeing ). Dua benefits by what is sent down and what is not sent down. O servants of Allah, you must make dua.”

In this hadith, Prophet Muhammad  ordered us to make dua, as dua always benefits us, whether the benefit is obvious to us or not.

Furthermore, Jabir ibn Abdulla, may Allah be pleased with him, reported:

The Messenger of Allah  said, “The best remembrance (zikr) is to declare there is no God but Allah (لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ). The best dua is to declare all praise is due to Allah (الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ)”.

Therefore, we should make effort to say these phrases لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ and الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ as many times as possible. InshaAllah, by making shukur to Allah SWT, Allah will increase our riziq (provision).

In addition, Prophet Muhammad  said,

“No Muslim ever prays to his Lord with these words for anything, but He will answer his prayer”. The words are:

"There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers."

(Quran 21:87)

This great dua was made by the Prophet Yunus عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ in the belly of a whale in the darkness of the deep sea, and we should use this dua in our own prayers.

In another narration, Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, reported:

The Messenger of Allah  said, “Beware of the dua of the oppressed, for it ascends to Allah as if it were a flare.”

Just as a spark of fire lights up the dark sky, the dua of the oppressed person flares up in the sight of Allah SWT, and is accepted by Him.

So do not oppress or abuse anyone, especially when we are in a position of power, for Allah SWT is with the oppressed. This includes our own families, the orphans, the servants and those under our employment.

We ask Allah SWT to forgive all our sins, grant us Afiah, and accept our dua. Ameen.

Second khutbah:

Dear respected brothers & sisters;

It is probably human nature to suddenly turn to Allah when one is in distress or facing a calamity such as illness or accident, but the real test of our sincerity with Allah is when everything seems fine, when everyone in the family appear to be happy, when business is booming and the job is going well.

Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, reported:

The Messenger of Allah  said, “Whoever would be pleased for Allah to answer him during times of hardship and difficulty, let him supplicate often during times of ease.”

Therefore, we should make dua throughout the good and tough times. We hope that by making dua when we are in times of ease, Allah SWT will respond to our dua when we are in any difficulty.

Remember that dua always benefits us, inshaAllah; either Allah SWT will quickly fulfill our dua, or store it for us for the Akhirah, or Allah SWT will divert an evil from us. So we must continue making dua as much as possible.

May Allah SWT give us tawfiq to benefit from what has been shared today. Ameen.

Dua:
