Eidul Fitr 2022: A New Beginning

Written on 05/01/2022

O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].

(Quran 3: 102)

We remind ourselves to fear Allah SWT, in all places and in all situations, in public and in private, and do not transgress His limits.

Alhamdulillah, we thank Allah SWT, for gathering us on this blessed day of Eidul Fitr, in a large gathering as one community, in celebration of the blessed month of Ramadhan.

We ask Allah SWT to forgive our sins, and to forgive our loved ones, especially those who are no longer with us to celebrate today's Eid.

Respected brothers and sisters;

Eid is indeed a day of victory and celebration.

Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, reported that her father, Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, once came to her on the day of Eid while she was with the Prophet , and there were two girls singing songs of the Ansar on the day of Bu’ath.

Her father did not agree with this, and said twice, “Musical instruments of Satan!”

The Prophet  said:

“Leave them Abu Bakr. Verily, every community has a celebration and this day is our celebration.”

Respected brothers and sisters;

Let us think back over the past four weeks, when Allah SWT, through His Infinite Mercy and Wisdom, turned our daily routine upside down.

We cannot say Ramadhan was easy, especially for our youngsters. We fasted long hours, stayed up late for extra prayers, woke up before sunrise for suhur, then went back to sleep and woke up again for school or work whilst fasting, missing our usual breaks, and not just for a few days but over a whole entire month.

Plus we went through 2 years of a pandemic, living with a deadly virus.

Yet together we did it, Alhamdulillah, and with the Help and Mercy of Allah SWT here we are all today, feeling physically, mentally, and spiritually fitter and healthier compared to any other time of the year.

Indeed, Ramadhan is a miracle in more ways than we could ever imagine, and Eid is a well deserved celebration.

But now comes the challenge.

During Ramadhan, we had extra spiritual help from Allah SWT to do many good deeds: the evil devils were chained, the gates of Paradise were opened, and the gates of Hell shut closed.

So the challenge is to keep the momentum going for the coming year. In theory, with our usual food and drink, we should find it easier to continue with our ibadah.

Therefore, let us make the strong intention on this blessed day to continue cultivating our relationship with Allah SWT, with our prayers, by attending the masjid more regularly and reading the Quran as much as possible. Let us also use the 6 sunnah fasts of Syawwal to help keep our spiritual fire burning.

In addition, we should maintain the restraint in our speech and behaviour, which was one of the aims of Ramadhan, when the Messenger of Allah  said, “Whoever does not leave evil words and deeds while fasting, Allah does not need him to leave food and drink.”

Importantly, we should continue to give support to those in desperate need, in Ireland and all over the world through our dua and charity.

We thank Allah SWT for the opportunity of witnessing Ramadhan; may we and our loved ones witness many more. Ameen.

Second khutbah:

Respected brothers and sisters;

Eid is also a day of forgiveness. Asking for forgiveness, as well as giving.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was the most forgiving person, even after suffering a lot of abuse at the hands of people who were against his mission.

Following the conquest of Mecca, after years of persecution enacted against the early Muslims, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ forgave the conquered Quraish without any retribution, and in so doing further enhanced the cause of Islam as a religion of truth and mercy.

Truly forgiving another person is never easy, especially if one was hurt deeply. But if we were able to do this, then just as Muhammad's  rank was raised in the sight of Allah SWT, so too would ours be raised, inshaAllah.

Hence on this blessed day of Eid, let us follow this Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad , and forgive one another for the sake of Allah SWT.

Dua:

We ask Allah SWT to forgive all our sins, to forgive our parents, elders and loved ones.

We ask Allah SWT to accept our good deeds and answer our dua.

We ask Allah SWT for Afiah in our dunia and akhira.

We ask Allah SWT to guide and protect our children, to bestow upon them good character, and for the light of iman, tauhid and taqwa to penetrate their hearts.

We ask Allah SWT to give honour and relieve the suffering of the Muslim Ummah all over the world, and relieve the suffering and distress of all of His creation, especially the children, women and elderly.

We ask Allah SWT for protection against evil in all its form, especially the whisperings of the Shayateen, amongst the jinn and the human.

We ask Allah SWT for the benefit of everything that Muhammad  asked for, and seek refuge from everything that Muhammad  sought protection from.

We ask Allah SWT to bless Ireland where we practice our deen in safety and security, and to bless the people of Ireland who have fought to relieve the suffering of others around the world.

We ask Allah SWT to give us tawfiq to benefit from what has been shared today. Ameen.

Respected brothers and sisters,

On behalf of Clongriffin Masjid, Eid Mubarak! We ask for your forgiveness.

May Allah SWT accept our good deeds.
