All praise is due to Allah SWT, Lord of the worlds, The Cherisher, The Sustainer.
May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad
, his noble family, his companions and all those who follow their guidance till the Day of Qiamah.

Alhamdulillah, we thank Allah SWT for the blessings of Jummah and for allowing us to gather here today.

We remind ourselves to fear Allah SWT as He should be feared. Fear Allah in all places and in all situations, at home and at work, in public and in private, and do not transgress His limits.

Respected brothers and sisters;

This is only the second Jummah after Ramadhan, and I am sure we are already feeling a drop in our spirituality. Ramadhan and Eid seem like a distant memory. The fasting, the Tarawikh prayers with the imam, the reading of the Quran seem a life time away.

It is only going to become more challenging the further we get from Ramadhan. Therefore, it is important we take steps now to maintain our relationship with Allah SWT. Amongst the best ways is by performing the Sunan fasts.

Abu Ayyub, may Allah be pleased with himreported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

Whoever fasts the month of Ramadhan and then follows it with six days of fasting in the month of Shawwal, it will be as if he fasted for the entire year.

Dear respected brothers & sisters;

It is highly recommended to fast any six days of the month of Shawwal after completing the fast of Ramadhan. The reward for fasting for these six days in addition to Ramadhan is like fasting for a year, and one who keeps up this habit every year will be rewarded as if they fasted every day in their life, InshaAllah.

One of the purposes of fasting in Shawwal is to help continue all the good practices that we have developed during Ramadhan, such as reading the Quran and performing the night prayers, to maintain our close relationship with Allah SWT.

We still have a few weeks of Shawwal left for anyone who has the intention to follow this Sunnah of Muhammad ﷺ.

Respected brothers and sisters;

From experience, it is actually difficult to fast these six days because we are doing them voluntarily. But it is important to capitalize on the positive momentum we built up in the last month. If we do not fast any days of Shawwal, it will be much more difficult to make fasting a regular habit throughout the year.

In addition, other Sunan days of fasting we should try to do are fasting on the days of Arafat and Ashura, fasting Mondays and Thursdays, and fasting three days in the middle of every month.

Regarding fasting on Mondays and Thursdays, Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

The deeds are presented on Monday and Thursday. Thus, I love for my deeds to be presented while I am fasting.

In another narration, Abu Dharr, may Allah be pleased with him reported: The Messenger of Allah,  said:

O Abu Dharr, if you are going to fast three days of the month, then fast on the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth days.

Respected brothers and sisters;

Being consistent in performing our ibadah is important in Islam; Allah loves good deeds that are done regularly, even if they seem minor.

Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, reported: The Messenger of Allah  said:

Know that the most beloved deed to Allah is that which is done regularly, even if it is small.

May Allah SWT bless us with the ability to maintain our relationship with Allah SWT, and be consistent with our ibadah including performing the Sunan fasts. Ameen.

Second khutbah:

Dear respected brothers & sisters;

To conclude, let us reinforce the good habits we have cultivated during Ramadhan and make fasting some days every month a regular practice.

Indeed, a new habit of fasting three days a month post Ramadhan is a great spiritual victory, which will InshaAllah benefit us physically, mentally and spiritually for the rest of the year until next year's Ramadhan.

Otherwise, there is a danger we will fall back into some bad habits, in our diet and our ibadah, and the great spiritual momentum we have built up over Ramadhan will be lost.

May Allah SWT give us tawfiq to benefit from what has been shared today. Ameen.

Dua:
