A Moist Liver

All praise is due to Allah SWT, Lord of the worlds, The Cherisher, The Sustainer.
May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad
, his noble family, his companions and all those who follow their guidance till the Day of Qiamah.

Alhamdulillah, we thank Allah SWT for the blessings of Jummah and for allowing us to gather here today.

We remind ourselves to fear Allah SWT as He should be feared. Fear Allah in all places and in all situations, at home and at work, in public and in private, and do not transgress His limits.

Respected brothers and sisters;

Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: The Messenger of Allah  said:

A man suffered from thirst while he was walking on a journey. When he found a well, he climbed down into it and drank from it. Then he came out and saw a dog lolling its tongue from thirst and licking the ground. The man said: This dog has suffered thirst just as I have suffered from it. He climbed down into the well, filled his shoe with water, and caught it in his mouth as he climbed up. Then he gave the dog a drink. Allah appreciated this deed, so He forgave him.

It was said, “O Messenger of Allah, is there a reward for charity even for the animals?”

The Prophet ﷺ said:

In every being with a moist liver there is a reward for charity.

Respected brothers and sisters;

If we desire that Allah SWT to have mercy upon us, we must show mercy to His creation. In this hadith, the Prophet ﷺ specifically mentioned a thirsty dog. He ﷺ did not say a thirsty cat, camel or goat but a dog, which is also a creation of Allah SWT.

Indeed, the man's actions of offering this dog water, for showing mercy to an animal in distress, was so appreciated by Allah SWT, that he received forgiveness from the Lord of the Heavens and the Earth.

And earning Allah's forgiveness, is indeed the true success.

Furthermore, not only did Allah SWT forgive this man, but his actions were mentioned by the Prophet , recorded forever as part of a hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari, that we are discussing even today.

How many billions of humans have lived and died that nobody knows their story? How many of us here, when we die would only remain in the memories of our loved ones, then eventually forgotten? But this man, for his actions of helping a thirsty animal, we are mentioning him in today's khutbah.

Respected brothers and sisters;

Allah SWT is Ash-Shakur, The Most Appreciative; it is one of His Beautiful Names, so do not belittle any good deed even to the smallest of creatures.

Unfortunately, we hear of people torturing animals, performing inhumane, despicable acts which would surely earn Allah's anger and punishment, may Allah save us.

And if Allah SWT shows appreciation to an act of mercy to a thirsty dog, what if we show mercy to another human being? Surely, this has greater merit.

Some people say confusing things, saying they only want to help people from their religion, or only help a certain race or group.

Abdullah ibn Amr, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

The merciful will be shown mercy by الرَّحْمَنُ the Most Merciful. Be merciful to those on the earth and the One in the heavens will have mercy upon you.

Respected brothers and sisters;

'Those on the earth' encompass all life. Do not restrict our help and support. Yes, we should start with our loved ones, our family members, but then we should quickly move on to help others, our neighbours, friends and the wider community.

At the very least, the general community we are living in (in Ireland) would witness how beautiful the religion of Muhammad  is, and there is no better da'wah than helping another person in need.

May Allah SWT guide us onto the true way of Muhammad ﷺ, and shower us with His Mercy and Forgiveness. Ameen.

Second khutbah:

Dear respected brothers & sisters;

Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: The Messenger of Allah  said:

Charity does not decrease wealth, no one forgives another but that Allah increases his honor, and no one humbles himself for the sake of Allah but that Allah raises his status.

In this hadith, there are valuable lessons in faith in Allah, and of character. Faith in Allah because we are commanded to do the opposite of our logic and desires.

Firstly, giving in charity, by our logic should decrease our wealth, but in reality giving sadaqah is a sure way of increasing, and earning more blessings in, our rizq.

Secondly, if we desire honour, then forgive another brother or sister for the sake of Allah SWT without condition, and Allah will honour us in this life and the next, inshaAllah.

Finally, avoid being arrogant or boastul in our speech and behaviour, and Allah will raise high our status amongst Man and the Angels, inshaAllah.

May Allah SWT give us tawfiq to benefit from what has been shared today. Ameen.

Dua:
